Mortgage Details Lost in the Post
Monday 4th June 2007 The Bank of Scotland has apologised to customers this week after it has emerged that the details of around 62,000 mortgage customers had been lost in the post.
A computer disc containing names, addresses, dates of birth and mortgage account numbers of customers has been missing for around 2 weeks and failed to arrive at its intended destination of a credit reference agency.
The computer disc is believed to have been lost and not stolen and the bank is assuring customers that fraud would be ‘almost impossible’ if the package had been intercepted.
The bank has sent letters of apology to its customers re-iterating that the chance of fraud was minimal and insisting that no passwords or pin words were included on the errant disc.
The bank is reviewing its procedures to ensure that an occurrence of this type does not happen again and has assured customers that in the "unlikely event of fraudulent activity" they would be compensated.
