European Health Insurance Card
As from the 1st January 2006, the E111 form has no longer been valid, replaced instead, by the EHIC Card (European Health Insurance Card.) It works along the same lines as the E111, covering the holder for medical treatment that might become necessary during your stay. It covers all countries in the European Union as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Children up to the age of 16 years, are eligible for cover on the card belonging to their parent or guardian. Applying for the card is quick and simple and there are a number of options available to do so. The first and quickest is to apply online. You will need to have your date of birth and NHS or National Insurance Number to hand. This method will ensure that your card is with you within 7 days. To apply by post, EHIC Forms are available from your nearest Post Office, though receiving the card will take up to 21 days. The other option is to apply by phone. The number is 08456062030 and this will ensure your card gets to you within 10 days.
Applying for an EHIC is not a lengthy or time consuming process and it can save a great deal of stress when on holiday. Apply with plenty of time in advance to ensure that you get the medical cover you might need.
